Classic Indian Chai

This classic Indian chai recipe is perfect for an afternoon pick-me-up, or a cosy drink on a cold winter day. With little to no prep, and using fresh aromatic and spices, this classic chai will be ready in no time!

Chai Recipe

I learnt this recipe during my stay with my aunt and uncle who drank chai religiously every single day. It’s the perfect drink to bring the whole family together, and enjoy a mid afternoon snack while resetting your mind for the remaining day.

Don’t worry if you don’t have all of the exact spices! You can easily omit or add your own favourite flavours to tweak the recipe to your taste. Enjoy with a biscuit, and sit back and relax.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups water (approx. 1 cup per person)

  • 4 tsps black loose leaf tea powder

  • 1 slice of ginger

  • 1/4 tsp ground cardamom (equivalent to 3-4 cardamom seeds)

  • 4 cm lemongrass

  • 3/4 cup milk

  • 2 tsp sugar (adjust to taste, optional to use cinnamon)

Directions

  • Pour water into a small stainless steel pot or milk pan.
  • Add loose leaf tea powder, ginger, cardamom and lemon grass and turn on stove to medium/high heat.
  • Bring to boil for 30 seconds and add milk. This will drastically reduce the temperature, so bring to boil again.
  • Once boiling, allow the milk to froth for 10-15 seconds and remove from heat.
  • Carefully pour the chai in tea cups, and add sugar. Stir well.

Notes

  • Feel free to add your own favourite spices to your chai to suit your taste!
